When Flipkart’s founder and CEO, Sachin Bansal, flew all the way to Ireland for Web Summit 4 years ago, few had heard of Flipkart. Sachin was only the second Indian tech CEO to attend Web Summit, following in the footsteps of Divyank Turakhia who attended our first event in 2010.
When Sachin returned from Web Summit in Dublin to Bengaluru in 2011 something changed. Word began to spread across India’s tech community about a conference thousands of miles away in Dublin, Ireland. Word spread so far, that by last year the number of Indian attendees at Web Summit had grown from a single person, Sachin Bansal, to over 300.
I wasn’t sure how long we could ignore the incredible growth of startups from India. So when Sachin recently suggested over Twitter that we start a conference in Bengaluru, I knew it was time. And so today I’m excited to announce that we’re launching our first conference in India in, you guessed it, Bengaluru. It’s called SURGE and will take place on February 23-24.
We’re going to bring the magic of Web Summit to India. We’re going to bring together the best startups and tech companies in India, alongside leading entrepreneurs, investors, media and more from around the world.
In the meantime, check out our Flickr to see what we have created before and these 80 Indian startups who are coming to our event in Hong Kong at the end of the month. We hope to see many of them and more again in Bengaluru in 2016.
We’re incredibly excited. We’ve lots more details to announce. But for now, you should sign up for a 2 for 1 discount code.
